Mark Alexander

Journalist, writer and grief ambassador – Mark Alexander is the author of a chart-topping grief memoir and a grief trilogy.

Mark lost his long-term partner to a heart attack and he spent the past seven years researching grief and writing about it. His narrative approach and ability to condense complex information into short actionable paragraphs, make the topics of his books engaging and easy to read.

When he is not writing, Mark is advocating for grief diversity.

My story

My writing career began in the year 2000 when a magazine editor commissioned me to write a monthly column. My narrative approach was a success and won me a promotion to a features writer which sparked an interest in travel.

A couple of months after my first article about Greece was published, I received a phone call. The mysterious caller arranged for a car to pick me up and take me to an undisclosed location. Once there, I was given a task and 24 hours to complete it. The car picked me up from home at 2pm sharp every day for the next week.

On the fifth day, my “M” revealed she was a lawyer and introduced me to her client – a Greek philanthropist, who offered me a job. My main task was to summarise the business pages of the daily press and present them to my new boss in Greek.

I spent the next decade writing and working for various companies and publications in Europe and Asia. My first cover story was published by a Thai travel magazine. Following my residency as a journalist in Thailand, I launched a series of niche websites.

When my long-term partner suffered a fatal heart attack, I took it as a sign to focus on my own health and wellbeing. I started a blog to document my grief journey and to connect with others in my situation. The blog grew into a chart-topping grief memoir and connected me to an international audience of grieving spouses.

I spend the next seven years researching grief and writing about it. One of my proudest achievements is the series of grief guides which I was commissioned to write for Dignity Funerals.

In 2021 I am releasing The grief trilogy – 2021 which includes the second edition of my debut grief memoir – Me, My Grief And I: Life Goes On.
